"I observed my hands and elbows moving in different directions, akin to a puppet," Bill said. "I tried to move my head, but I was immobile." Before he was sent to a hospital, his family flew in to say their last goodbyes.

FIGHTING TO LIVE
"Did I believe he had left? Indeed, Jodie, his wife, said. It's similar to going through a tunnel. It's simply unreal. He chose to fight, and with good cause, as they prepared to remove him from life support. The Szabos had formally adopted their granddaughter as their daughter the day before his tragedy. He lay motionless, prepared to face death, when he saw Ella, two years old. He said, "I had basically had it in my mind because I just [didn't want to live] if I was going to be quadriplegic."And I quickly modified my mind when Jodie said, 'Don't worry about Ella, we'll make sure that she always remembers you,' and then when she said, 'It's OK."
Their lives were drastically altered by Ella's arrival in ways they could never have predicted. "Every time I got to wake up in the middle of the night, and there's pain, I think of Jodie," Bill remarked following the vehicle accident. Though it is sluggish, he is making progress, and he is unsure of what lies ahead for him.

Because the game is so unique in so many ways, he misses it a great deal. Bill remarked, "Every game is different, every game." "Occasionally, you can see that the pitchers are getting warmed up.
